Since you are talking about making this longer term than a few months, I
would suggest that you actually build a wall, the studs and plates will cost
about 45 dollars, the 4 sheets of dry wall will be about 40, and for about
50 dollars you can get prehung interior door. A little tape, small tub of
mud and some paint and you have a room. I realize that with incidentals we
are talking about 50 dollars over the budget you listed, but with a little
searching you can probably find some of the materials cheaper that the HD
prices that I quoted.

Subject: [DIY] temporary wall/room divider ideas?
We live in a 2 br house, and our kids are too old to share their room
anymore, so my husband and I are planning to move our room to the living
room, making the dining room the living room. The only problem is privacy.
the living room is big, but open to the hall & dining room, so a privacy
wall (temporary) or divider that offers privacy as well as sound muffling,
that we can make ourselves on a pretty tight budget (less than $100) is what
we need, but aren't enthused about stringing up a curtain (or 6!) or
blankets. The opening we need to close, with an opening for a doorway, is 8'
tall by 12' wide. Any suggestions???
