OK, use a clamp or tack the boards in place then drill pilot holes and either use nails or screws, if I was doing it I would use a piece of 4x4 to fill the gap and probably hit it with a framing nailer to hold it in place since it will not be structural. Or fame it on the bottom with a 1x cut to fit across both 2x's and use either screws or 8d finish to attach it with.

Because I'm closing the gap between two 2 bys to keep wasps and hornets out.
It's the header on the new porch, made from two 2 by 8s (or 2 by 10s), one on each side of the 4 by 4 post. There's an open gap between the 2 bys, between the posts. I want to close that gap, especially recalling the size of the mud dauber nest that was removed from the old porch.
Wasps are already nest building along the header of the back porch.
Tomorrow I need to go out and spray them. But the gap on the front porch opens right into the space between the roof and the ceiling. Ideal for nasty bugs looking to nest. I'd like to prevent that if I can. I have the boards, and know they fit in the space. I also know my...erm...tendency to use the wrong size nail or screw and split boards.
