| NEC allows grandfathering of existing installations and does not make you rip or change things out to meet code as the code changes... Circumstances that require a new permit require latest NEC obediance such as a remodel or of course new consruction. And that can be excepted under other circumstances such as my girl that lives in an plaqued National Heritage House from the early 1900s..there still is that insulator pole-strung-wire hanging throughout the crawl space with bare bulbs dropping off whereever and however needed. I hope this helps your guard issue....as I am not sure if you are doing new or remodel or like-kind installation there.
