In case anyone is wondering, I finally bought a Craftsman 1 hp 3 gallon horizontal, oil-filled compressor that is doing a great job of keeping tires filled around here, from the lawn tractor's fronts (14 psi) to the truck's rears (80). With sale, discount and a coupon I got it for under $90, and consider it a very satisfactory investment. While it is advertised as capable of small nailing and painting jobs, the Sears salesfolks were very frank about it not being a great machine for that kind of work. But by just keeping the air pressure right in 13 different motor vehicles, trailers and carts it will, IMO, more than earn its keep.
Thanks again for all the advice and opinions. They were essential to this decision.

Thanks to so many of you who took the trouble to send your thoughts and
advice on my question, "Do I want a compressor?" I feel ready to go
shopping tomorrow with some knowledge in hand and the right questions to
ask. Much, much appreciated!
