I was thinking the same thing -- with all the excrement, refuse, etc., in soil and water run-off, there's no telling.

If it's "clean" enough to not kill you immediately or not cause a disease that's easily traceable back to the "cleaned" water, then that's good enough for them...
We contaminate MASSIVE quantities of water with a relatively-tiny amount of excrement.
Imagine if all that filth were to be removed from the water-equation, and allowed to be *useful* as fertilizer, and allowed to filter naturally through the soil before it gets to the groundwater...
