[DIY] Re: Winterizing an Unoccupied House

 

(re: allowing to freeze) I would be concerned about freezing finishes, (E.g. paints, sheet rock, framing); allowing to freeze could bring frost, (moisture), and unexpected issues can develop from moisture in strange places leading to mold/ fungus, or other unexpected issues.  Actually (thinking out loud), just "cooler than dew point" (could?) lead to sweating/ condensate problems.  FREEZING with moisture/ ice I have seen move 400# granite blocks 3-4" and brick walls bulge from water/ ice damage.  On the other hand, crawl spaces over open dirt I have seen remain mold free for 50+ YEARs, when no water leaks, but mostly they remain "above freezing" from simple earth ground heat...
