Thanks for the input. I've been meaning to reply, but have a hard time with this new yahoo system. Generally my messages get lost, so I've pretty much given up on posting to groups.
But, Dale was right, as always. He pretty much said what you have, and I suspected the same. I could see that the corner of the side with the remaining spring was not dropping down properly. It wasn't off by much, but it wasn't quite right.
I want to specifically thank Ron for responding about having experienced the same situation. It gave me hope that at least I could open the door till the weather warms enough to fix the springs. Ron, I did remove the remaining spring yesterday. And that did work. Thanks so much for giving me the courage to try that. You always hear that working with springs is so dangerous. Really wasn't that bad. The best part is that the door will now open, though it is a bit heavier than anticipated. So, spring replacement is imminent.
On another topic: Water Softeners
I got a WaterBoss. Worst product ever. Surprised they're still in business based on my experience and reviews I've read online. The controller malfunctioned at 35 months. I had a 3 year warranty, so they replaced it under warranty. At least that. But now, 18 months later, a metal piece actually broke off of it when I tried to unplug the converter to see if I could reset it by unplugging, then plugging it back in. There's a small piece of metal hanging off the end of the converter. A new controller is $200.00. If it would last another 18 months, that's approx $11.00/mo for soft water. I could live with that. But not sure I want to give those people any more money.
Anyone have opinions on water softener brands? Or better experience with WaterBoss?
As an additional irritation: the brine tank(?/that cylindrical thing that holds the beads) is situated so close to the sides of the outside tank that salt will not flow around to the back of the machine. I have to use a paint extension handle to coax salt around both sides of that inner tank to fill up the back, otherwise it will only hold one bag of salt. Really bad design IMO. The thing is made to hold salt, so why design it to thwart that process?
I'm a bit curious about the non-electric system, Kinetico. Anyone have experience with that?
