Wait a minute! Are you saying that the circuit's hot wire in the "fuse box" is under a lug instead of on a fuse or breaker? If you actually have fuses instead of breakers, you DO need a whole house upgrade. The GFCI plug is NOT overload (amperage) protection. You MUST have overload protection on all wiring leaving the main power panel other than the main.
