I think this is a little over analyzed..Higher AC temp setting clearly indicates less use of AC to bring
ambient inside temps lower...lower the T(in) setting of the thermostat, the more the AC has to run..Delta T is the key here...
the larger the gap between T(out) and T(in) requires more energy (electricity) to bridge that
gap..
Energy use E = AC (use) * {Delta T = T(out) - T (in) }--thus the larger the temp difference the
more E used...this is not taking into consideration of insulation and door in and outs...etc which
would effect the gradient of Delta T (ie how fast T (in) rises due to a given T(out)..some houses
have R 39 some R1 LOL....so delta T changes more rapidly, Actually-- regardless of insulation
and other factors-- it holds true that greater amounts of E will be used the lower your desired T(in) to
be, for a given T(out).
So setting to 80 when in 90's outside will clearly result in more $$ in the bank instead of your E company.
Just for bragging rights, we live in San Diego, Ca and our avg daytime temp last month was about 88deg F,
Our electric bill was 5 cents!! We used 1 kWh from SDGE. hehehhe..I guess we have to admit
we do have 10KW of solar and sun availability was 95% last month!!!@' and our avg Delta T was 5 deg F
which was not to bad for sleeping
and that is it to ahhhh...a "T"
R
PS_
SDGE charged us a first-time-ever $9.50 "adjustment charge" which we are
appealing for reversal with letters to them and the newspapers.

Curious about this. They say
the cooler your run your AC unit, the more it will
cost.
Let's say all
factors are the same. Outside temperature, insulation and
all.
If it's 95
degrees F outside...
A. You have your indoor thermostat
set to 75F. Your AC will be frequently running because it
will always hit 76F, given that the outside temp is 95
(90's throughout the day).
B. You have your indoor thermostat
set to 80F. Your AC will be frequently running because it
will always hit 81F, given that the oustide temp is 95
(90's throughout the day).
Is the idea that it takes longer for
a higher indoor temperature to increase one degree versus a
lower indoor temperature to increase by one degree? Hence,
the AC would kick on less frequently? ...even just between
the difference of setting it at 75 versus 80.
The thing I can understand is if by
chance the morning and evening temperatures reach 76-80 and
thereby won't or less likely to kick on the AC if you
have it set at 80.
