Ron,

If its quiet old it would probably be a good ides to sand it down first to smooth it out and remove all old finish.  If you want it a natural look (see the grain) a very good Spar Varnish should work well.  Spar varnish is used on boats etc.

An exterior deck paint should be available in your location.  Never hurts to search "best deck paint" etc on the internet.

 We have a covered deck (actually it's more of a walkway) that has already been painted.  The paint is old and worn and we need to repaint it.  This will be the first time since we boaught the place, so we don't know what was used on it before.
 
Does anyone know of a good paint for decks?  I was advised the Floor and Porch paint at Lowe's but we used it on some wood floors in another building and it didn't stick too well.
