[DIY] OT - Blenders

Have had an oster for over 20 years.  It still works but looks old and I'd like a new, preferably larger, one - but my absolute criteria is that it blend ice smoothly.  Not just crush it to snow cone consistency but blend it smooth as silk.  I don't like any crunchiness.

I bought a Ninja Pro BL500....reviews sounded great - $89 at WalMart.  I made pina colodas to test it - did crush the ice and blend fast - but left it like a snow cone.  Not smooth.  Put it back and ran it longer, no difference.  Put it in my old blender and presto, it was smooth.  There are a number of things I like about this Ninja, the locking lid, the pour spout, the size etc.  Do not care for the plastic container but can live with it.  Put some ice, a whole orange and a little milk in it this morning and had an orange smoothie quickly, but still not as smooth as I like them.  My hubby made his protein shake and loved it.  I hate to pay this much and still have to use the old blender - I don't mind paying a little more if I can get one that does what I want - but not interested in paying several hundred dollars :)

Here's my problem.  I've read reviews on-line for hours but I believe what most people call smooth, isn't what I want.  A new Oster would probably do the trick but they are exactly the same design.  Plus the entire lid lifts off and if you have anything very thick you have to spoon it out out or it comes out in a big splash all over the counter.  It seems to be an either/or.  The VitaMix is more than I need, I'm not really a juicer and it's too expensive.  I don't care for the design of the ones like the Margaritaville blender.  First you crush the ice then blend the drink.  Anyone have any experience with the new blenders?  I have company coming today for a week and I'd love to have something big enough to make drinks for a crowd, gazpacho, breakfast shakes etc.

Thanks, Jan in MO where it's supposed to be 101 again today.  The poor plants don't know what to do with this up and down temp fluctation.
