It would be a shame to cut down a beautiful tree, I think you'll enjoy it in the spring when it blooms and it will provide a pretty spot of shade. I'd opt for something other than concrete though, I've seen too many trees eventually killed that way. Keep in mind, I hate to see any tree cut down :)

A good option for a patio around a tree is to use flat stones instead of concrete. That way stone be be adjusted as roots grow. Also, water and other nutrients can get to the roots. I know that landscapers sometime surround trees with concrete, but that doesn't make it right.

My husband and I are planning on putting in a 29' x 14' concrete patio along the side of our house. Our problem is that there is a 15' dogwood tree that is right in the middle of the where the patio is going to be and we really hate to cut it down as it gives some shade so we are debating on leaving the tree, constructing the form for the concrete about 1 1/2' around the edge of the tree trunk and pouring the concrete. I did notice as we were leveling that ground out in preparation for the patio that there were only a few very small roots uncovered. We do plan on putting about 2-3 inches of #57 stone and then 3-4 inches of concrete. I'm concerned that the roots from the tree will eventually crack the concrete. Any suggestions?
