Might make a difference if you own or rent but you could build a fake wall with 2x4's and sheetrock or paneling. Anchor it to the floor or side walls to stabilize it. You could add insulation to help with the sound. If you have a Habitat for Humanity or similar shop near by you might find several old doors and join them. We can get doors here for $2 each. We've used door hinges to connect lattice panels to make a freestanding screen (zigzag type) and added drapes on rods on one side. You might find 6' bookcases at stores like BigLots or second hand stores and line them up. Three would be just short of 9' and you could drape the doorway, would give additional storage also. Face them in or out and paint or use fabric on the back side. With kids anything you put up would need to be stabilized. Not sure there would be much in the way of sound muffling unless you add some insulation of some type.
We live in a 2 br house, and our kids are too old to share their room anymore, so my husband and I are planning to move our room to the living room, making the dining room the living room. The only problem is privacy. the living room is big, but open to the hall & dining room, so a privacy wall (temporary) or divider that offers privacy as well as sound muffling, that we can make ourselves on a pretty tight budget (less than $100) is what we need, but aren't enthused about stringing up a curtain (or 6!) or blankets. The opening we need to close, with an opening for a doorway, is 8' tall by 12' wide. Any suggestions???
