Re: [DIY] Textures and Popcorn:

Depends on how well the texture had adhered to the ceiling and how vigorous you get with the dusting operation.  Lightly dusting with the soft dust brush on a vacuum cleaner may be all you would need.  This will also grab any of the "popcorn" you knock loose.  The popcorn is often nothing more than chopped Styrofoam and is therefore quite fragile.

If I dust a popcorn ceiling, will it take the popcorn off?

Subject: [DIY] Textures and Popcorn:

Popcorn ceilings and textured walls came into vogue for a reason.  They very effectively covered up imperfect tape and mud jobs and thus cut construction costs.  Be aware that when you remove a popcorn ceiling you will almost always need to go over all the joints with a finisher coat of mud.  The eye will naturally gravitate to the imperfections in any flat open surface.  You can hang pictures and place furniture along walls which will break up the line of vision, but the ceiling is there and bare for all to behold.
