Re: [DIY] Wall liner / ceiling paper?

Is there any way to redo flaws on an old stippled ceiling without the major undertaking of an almost start-over project? (House is 57 years old)
I do not want to cover the whole thing with another layer of ceiling sheetrock as the ceiling is already not quite 8' from the floor.

We have one unfinished eye-sore in our old home. Stippled plaster is cracked along sheetrock joints and there are two places in the living room area where the sheetrock has cracked, broken and fallen revealing a 2" area showing the sheetrock underneath. A very nice and conscientious local plaster guy came and said the only way to do it *right* would be to remove all that is loose and also all that follows any cracks, repair and add new joining tape, spackling that area.  Sand the rest of the ceiling stipple effect  down on the whole ceiling and let him re-stipple a new coat of plaster.,
This all happened when we had a leaky roof and the seams got wet and two areas close to the wall got water saturated..

I'm dreading the mess, the dust, the chaos that this is going to create for about 10 days as all the repaired areas need to cure before the next step can happen.
We are so close to being finished with the updates and repairs, new windows,  and this is the remaining project.

We have worked hard for about 2 years now. I know that the ceiling should have been addressed first thing but I did a lot of stuff with no help as my husband thought the place wasn't worth fixing as any buyer would just buy it for the land. As the place began to look better he has taken more of a helping attitude and he is fully on-board now in accepting it as our home.

I have seen several old school houses that had been revamped into homes and some have been good and others not so good.  Hope you plan on sharing photos of your efforts.  What do you have for a surface under the paneling that you are removing?  If you are left with a relatively smooth surface after the paneling has been removed, have you considered "Felting" as opposed to rocking?  Felting only adds about 1/16 to 1/8 inch to the walls surface and avoids the necessity of adjusting the trim around the doors and windows.  It is also called "wall liner" and can be applied over paneling to provide a smooth surface for either painting or wall papering.  Here is one site you might investigate.

Currently working on a bedroom pulling the old paneling off the walls. I guess paneling is a thing of the past so ill be rocking it. First obstacle I notice I have to retrim the windows because of the sheetrock thickness. Joy. The woodwork is trashed anyhow.
