[DIY] Rust prevention?

 

Using some 2" brads outdoors.  They will be painted over.  Doing some reading I'm getting the impression that rust will bleed through paint.

Will countersinking the brads slightly, filling them over and then (latex) painting them do the trick?

If so, any tricks on countersinking brads that have already been shot?  What should be used to fill over the brad.  Wood filler?  Putty?
