[DIY] Re: Cleaning old oil stains on garage floor

Since you are calling it a stain we assume you have mopped up and cleaned

all the loose oil that might be on top of the concrete.  Your floor is porous
unless someone ever applied sealer to it the same way sealer is applied
to grout or granite countertops.   That said,  the oil has soaked into the
concrete and it cannot be "washed off"  or washed out.  However
the best you can hope for is to etch the concrete with an acid like Muriatic acid
full strength.  BE VERY CAREFUL....  This stuff will eat your skin off and cause
instant blindness if you get it into your eye.  Wear rubber gloves and goggles
and pour a little bit on the oil stain spread it around and wait for ten or fifteen minutes.
then pour pure water on the stain to dilute the acid.   The most you can hope for
here is that the darkness of the stain will now be a good bit lighter.

You can now seal the rest of your floor.   Oil based polyurethane that is diluted
slightly with the appropriate solvent can be painted on the floor and dont put
more than can be soaked up by the concrete otherwise you will have a clear
film layer that can chip and peel and look horrible.
