Plastic that gets sticky like that is starting to break down. The handles will probably last as long as the tool. The sticky coating is somewhat removed with degreasers. You can try household ammonia, or maybe greased lightning to reduce it. Plastic wrap as jeffinvero65 suggests is good advice, too.
