re: Plan-A refinish, have you talked w/ a pro in regard to embracing the
age/ damage/ wear/ tear, and leaving a lot of it for character? Again,
house over 100. You just need a sealed, dust free, water resistant,
attractive finish. Some areas (might) even paint/ clear coat with a
carpet-like stencil/ pattern? My $0.02..

Shouldn't the old paint be removed before trying to paint over the floor?
That's what I'm told about repainting...strip, prime, paint. I'd think on a
floor it's even more important given the wear and tear floors get on a daily
basis.
Getting the hundred plus year old paint and shellac off the original floor,
without harming the wood, is the problem. I looked where the guys worked
and even I could see it was a near impossible job. There's too many layers
that have been there too long. I pulled off three layers of linoleum, one
on top of another, just to get to the wood. The paint and shellac are the
same way - one of top of another. Being able to refinish the original floor
would be my ideal, which is why it was Plan A. After seeing the results of
two days' worth of work...it's not going to happen without access to a LOT
more time and money than I have available. This remodel has been in the
works for 6 years. I need it done. Painting over is a nice idea, but not
practical.
Thanks for the thought though.
