[DIY] RE: Air Vent

Just saw the Oatey Air vents, that replace the vent that goes through the ceiling.  Anyone familiar with these?  There are no building codes in our county so that isn't a problem for us if this simple product would solve the problem.

[DIY] Air vent needed on drain?

When we had the Liberty pump macerator system installed, the upstairs toilet and the downstairs washer both drain through it.  Never had a problem.  We had planned to install a laundry sink at a future date, however, the washer would drain out this pipe instead of through the system, so the plumber came out and stuck a tall piece of pipe in it and said that would work.  And it has till last week.  Now the laundry room is almost finished - we have decided against a sink right now - but had this unsightly pipe sticking up.  The plumber cut it off close to the wall and covered it with a rubber "plug" that prevents the water from coming out.  But - in my online search — I think that pipe provided an air vent, since when we went upstairs this morning and found the toilet had backed up with sewage and had to use a plunger.  No one has been up there since the plumber was here, so I suspect when I washed, it was like having an air bubble in a line — and the water had no place to go.  Does this sound reasonable?  Would removing the plug and putting in a "trap" with a taller pipe on it again solve the problem?  I really hate to call the plumber back because he did this as a favor to us while he was here installing a new cartridge on the shower controls, and didn't charge for it. The original system was installed work was out of warranty.

This may have been exacerbated by the fact he also rerouted the drain from the upstairs toilet - since the original drain pipes were installed in the middle of the utility room, which didn't allow us to use it for anything else.  I had wondered if that would slow the drainage but the upstairs toilet is rarely used unless we have guests.  The drain from the washer is horizontal and I assume connects with the vertical toilet drain before it goes into the pump.

Appreciate any thoughts and instructions!!

[DIY] Re: Sewing a Boot from the Outside

The dozen pictures I posted yesterday at  https://drive.google.com/ drive/folders/ 0Byi95S7VFo1XMVVsYnVLSUJRUkk?u sp=sharing  were supposed to have accompanying text.  For reasons unknown, some people got the pictures in the correct order, some got them in reverse order, and some didn't get the text attached to each picture.  So here's the text, and also descriptions of the first and last pictures in the series, so you'll know which order to look at them in.

1. (First photo, with picture of needle and thread). These are the main tools, a shortened needle with a large eye, dental floss for the thread, and the patch itself. It is tremendously easier if (as here) the patch is glued on first and the holes for the needle are prepunched.

2. After inserting the needle in the hole, you will probably need to push it through with force.  I used a paper clip for this.  Here, I have made the first stitch in the row.  The sewing awl on the upper right was used to punch the holes, but any sharp awl or punch of the right size will work.  (The black thing on the lower right is one leg of the tripod that held the camera.  You'll also see random junk on the counter, testimony to my remarkable housekeeping ability).

3.  Obviously, the hard part of sewing from one side is how do you get the thread back out again?  I use a loop of dental floss threaded through the same needle (which is why the eye has to be large).  A button is on the other end of the loop, and the ends tied together.

4. Put the needle with the loop into the second hole.  Then bring the loop up to the opening at the top of the boot and remove the needle.  The button is to prevent the whole loop from getting pulled inside..

5. Now is the trick: Put the single thread that you sewed into hole #1 inside the loop that you sewed into hole #2, and pull the loop back out of hole #2.

6. Here's the loop pulled back out of hole #2.  That brings the original thread back out with it so you can sew the next stitch.  This photo shows the loop just after I pulled it out again.  [Note: the button I tied on the loop is the white button in the previous picture.  This translucent button is one I tied to the end of the original thread to keep me from accidentally pulling it inside the boot].

7. Here's the thread out of hole #2, ready to start the next stitch.  It would be extremely difficult to find the back of this hole (even if your fingers could reach it), but using this technique, you can do it fairly easily.

8. Several stitches now finished at this point.  I finish the row then reverse, but you can also reverse after each stitch, putting multiple stitches in each pair of holes.  This is what I did on the opposite side of the patch.

9. The row is now finished and I'm about to reverse.

10.  Stitching is now done back to the starting point.  Dental floss is very strong, but it doesn't hold knots well.  Therefore, I end this stitching by tying a bunch of knots, then melting the ends of the thread together with a butane lighter.

11.  Here's the bunch of knots, high enough so the heat from melting won't weaken the actual stitching.

12.  (Last photo, showing full row of stitching). Here's the final row of stitching with the ends melted together.  As you can see, I've done various sides of this patch at different times and this stitching isn't particularly neat looking.  This row had to be redone, giving me a chance to take these photos.

[DIY] Sewing a Boot from the Outside

I'm currently laid up with a broken bone in my foot, so I can't ride my motorcycles, fix my house, or do much of anything, and I'm going stir-crazy.

So I captioned a group of photos I shot last summer on how to sew a patch on a boot when you only have access to the outside.  I used this to sew a protective patch on the top of a motorcycle boot to prevent wear from the gear-shift lever.  But the same method can be used to repair stitching in the toe of a shoe or sneaker, or basically to sew anything where you don't have access to both sides of the material.  I used dental floss because of its strength, but other kinds of thread can be used as needed.  This isn't quite on the topic of home repair, but I hope repair to things found in homes is also appropriate.

The link below gives access to the photos.  Unfortunately, the link has the photos in reverse order.  So click on the LAST photo and left-click "Preview," then go through them backwards to get the proper order. (There is also a description of what I'm doing in each photo.  To see it, click on the three vertical dots on the right, then click on "Description").

NOTE: These instructions on how to look at the photos/descriptions are for Windows.  I have no clue how other operating systems do it.

I did turn the pilot off and the gas off for the summer. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: [DIY] Gas log pilot problem

The logs are the only problem. Everything else is fine. I suspect you're right about a spider. I just used canned air to blow any dust off. Don't think it's enough to damage anything. That's what we did once years ago at another place. Maybe a touch from the compressor would be better.
