Hi Joyce;

Unfortunately, it is too late to do anything with the old group email
achieve. YahooGroups extended the times for those who missed
the first deadline.  All of the old emails have now been deleted.
I recommend that each person who wants to, simply save the
posts they feel they might want to reread in the future.  We all
have a lot of storage on our conputers, and emails take up
virtually no space. Google even stores them in the cloud.

Now.......I just had a new idea which I might try for my
LittleHouses and WoodGas groups.  It is, while keeping the
YahooGroups that everyone is already signed up for, to set
up a GoogleGroup that has a subscription to the YahooGroup.
That way the YahooGroup will send emails to the GoogleGroup,
where they will be stores with a search function. However, this
may not work, due to some quirk in the way the Google signup
functions, but if it does, it might be an easy way to regain the
email archive function that YahooGroups has eliminated.
But, regardless, my YahooGroups (and this group, too)
seem to be functioning fine, as is. The important factor
is that people are posting to the group.

Some of you have posted about other groups. Please share that information on this  email.
If you can please explain if it is easy to transfer the old post from the yahoo group over to what you recommend and if it is free.

Re: [DIY] Bottom heating element of oven doesn't work

I tested the bake element and there was no continuity so I am ordering another one.  Thanks for the help.

[DIY] Re: GFCIs

Suspect the original theory on the ground based on getting shock risk  from motor/ capacitor leakage (or even an old lamp bulb socket metal housing) to a motor housing that was NOT grounded, and then (someone) touching, being shocked....so in theory, if housing grounded, enough leakage would trip fuse/ breaker vs no trip of ungrounded.  Since GFCI does NOT measure current through the GROUND wire (common misconception), Ground wire NOT required to trip from leakage.... GFCI simply looking for a DIFFERENCE/ DELTA between HOT and Neutral current in (micro?)/ milli-amps, a GFCI works well (trips when appropriate) w/ two-wire, like Xmas lighting.  Hope this helps

[DIY] GFCIs

I just found something interesting about GFCIs:  If you use a GFCI, you don't need a ground wire for the outlets downstream and it's legal to use a 3-prong plug as long as its properly marked.  I understand how, with or without a ground the GFCI can provide safety on the load of the line.  But I do not understand how it can substitute for a ground.

Does anyone have a simple explanation for this?

I don't know the owner of this group, so I will post this note.  I highly recommend moving this group to Googlegroups..  The simplest way is to create a new group and invite people to apply for the group.  It will be confusing for a while, but the end result would be much better than Yahoo.

I converted all my groups to googlegroups several years ago.  Googlegroups supports email subscription, online web browser access and ***embedded photographs*** in messages (a huge improvement).  Daily digests are also supported.

Re: [DIY] Bottom heating element of oven doesn't work

Unplug the stove and open up the back panel.  Most likely there is a wire that has been compromised.  You can also check for continuity between the two ends of the element after you disconnect the electrical connections.  If there is no continuity, it's open and get a replacement.  Most likely it's just a wire to that's the problem.  Make sure if  you replace any wire, you use a high temp wire and use high temp connections.

how old is the stove? it might be time to either buy a new one, or call someone who knows how to check it out. IF the electrical wired burned it could be shorting out and you can have an awful fire.   Be safe.  (did I tell you I have a lot of respect for electric)

Basic continuity checks and voltage tests should enable you to figure this out with your multimeter within minutes.

First, of course unplug the range or flip it's breaker if it is hard wired.
Most heating elements are bolted to the rear of the range. Remove the mounting bolts, gently pull it forward and see how the wires are mounted to it. Newer ranges use spade lugs, really old ranges use wires held in place by screws. Remove one wire and use your multimeter to test for continuity.
The reading should be well under 10 ohms.
The exact reading isn't critical.
If you have element continuity, carefully arrange the wires so they don't short to each other or to the frame, turn power back on with the thermostat on high and measure the voltage across the element wire. You should have 240vAC. If you don't either the wiring has an open or there is a bad connection to the element or the thermostat itself is bad (unlikely). Of course make sure the function switch is in the correct position (bake not broil, etc).
