Re: [DIY] Re: What to do with unused toilet?

It was already leaking, right? So those parts likely need replaced anyways.

I have a toilet that I never use and the mechanism started leaking so I shut it off.  Now the tank is completely dry.  But there's no need to flush a toilet to keep the water in the bowl from drying up and letting sewer gas in.  Just pour a cup or two of water gently into the bowl a few times a year.  Don't pour a lot or pour fast, because that might make it automatically flush and there's no water in the tank to fill it again.

If it comes to disposing of the toilet I had a lot of difficulty with local trash dump

so i ended up smashing the unit into small chunks and bagged up and disposed in
trash over several weeks....

Since it has been
unused for a couple of years, the only things you need to
worry about is whether the seal between the tank and the
bowl is still OK, the gaskets on the tank bolts are still
holding, and if the flapper
ball still seals.  Basically, at worst, you might be
looking at a complete rebuild of the tank.  Chances are
that not all of those are needed, maybe none.

I would have agreed
to keep the toilet active.  Since the water in the
toilet P-trap might dry up if it's not used in a long
time, you may end up with sewer gasses coming in to the
house from it.

My advise is to
turn it on, flush it a couple times then turn it off, check
for leaks, then wait for a day or two.  If any of the seals
need replacing, you won't loose a lot of water and flood
out the room.  If there
are no leaks after the waiting time, and the water in the
tank is still at the right height, go ahead and keep the
water on and use the toilet now and then.

Another
consideration is: if it's an old toilet and it leaks
from the tank to the floor, you probably
should consider replacing it with a more efficient
toilet.  If only the flapper ball needs replacing and the
water
drains from the tank during the test period, they are cheap
and only replace that.

Hi everyone,

A few years ago, I noticed that the water in our guest toilet -- which basically only got used once a year for random reasons -- was getting stagnant and dirty. So I drained it and shut off the water since we never used it.

Recently, someone mentioned to me that it might be better to keep it active and just remember to flush it every now and then. Is that true? Also, if it's been drained and dormant for a while -- 1-2 years -- is there a safer way to get it back to active? Or is it OK to just turn it on and flush it a few times for good measure?

Thanks!

Mike

[DIY] Build shelves?

I have an area in  a corner between a wall and formica cabinets.   It  measures about 23" deep and 16" wide ( although I could move the cabinet either way a few inches if I need to.  I want to store some mats, blankets and other unwieldy objects there.  Is there a good way to do that without building shelves?  I do not want damage either the cabinet or the wall.

Thanks

Re: [DIY] Re: Identifying sprinkler circuit after tree removal destroyed some

A single head can sometimes get clogged with silt, dramatically reducing its flow.  Its easy to remove the nozzle from the head and run the single sprinkler circuit to flush it out.

Circuit 2 should be independent of circuit 1 and can be safely used.

Finally got around to testing this past week. Since all of my plumbing issues over the past year have ended in disaster, I just want to sanity check here -- I am pretty sure circuit 2 is safe to use and circuit 1 has the cut line.

When activated, circuit 1 came out at half pressure at best.

When activated, circuit 2 seemed totally normal. My only uncertainty is that there is a head that is buried behind a push and I couldn't see it, though all of the ones leading up to it popped fine and sprayed at full pressure.

So, going by this, is it safe to say that I can still use circuit 2 without digging up around the line to check? And just cap off the line for circuit 1 at the final half-pressure head?

Thanks!

Re: [DIY] cutting chain link fencing

I would recommend even longer 24" handle bolt cutters as the OP indicated they did not have much strength.

Can this kind of fencing (chain link) be cut with big wide opening pruning
loppers? I don't have much strength but I think these kind shears are
pretty powerful. Can anyone estimate? It is in a hard to get to spot and I
think the pointedness of these kind of loppers could be inserted there.

No. You need bolt cutters like these.
