Google thermostats with limits.   The woods is full of them.

I can get a lock box for the thermostat, but that looks tacky and might scare off good possible tenants during turns.  Does anyone know of a thermostat I can set to certain temperature range and not have the tenants fool with it?  There are four units with this situation and the electrical bill is way higher than it should be.

Re: [DIY] thermostat setting

We use a NEST thermostat and it has the ability to lock the temp range from either the thermostat itself or
via the iphone/android app:

Speaking about this, does anyone know the best way to insulate that concrete? What is available as a vapor barrier so I can prevent car exhaust coming up from the garage underneath. Any help would be so appreciated.

Thanks Aki, my only real goal right now is to cover the concrete, as cheaply and easily as possible.  I think these will do the job, we just payed out a big chunk of money to finish installing wood on the ceiling and insulating the rest of the living area.  These we can do ourselves.

Thanks to everyone for your input, it helped to make our decision.

Re: [DIY] Re: Self stick carpet tiles

We have the self stick carpet carpet tiles at work. For the most part they work quite well.  The squares at work are 16"x16".  I highly recommend those larger
squares over any 12"x12" squares since the more each piece covers, the less lines will be present (the faster the install).  However, if laid down properly, the lines become nearly invisible and with traffic, the lines are very hard to even notice.

I would say that they last about 3-5 years before they start to stain to the point that they need to be replaced (also depends on the amount of traffic
too). A lot of offices use the squares because they're significantly easier to not only install but also because you're not having a big roll that requires much more effort to cut accurately and lay down.

The added benefit, as was already mentioned, is that if an area gets stained and can't be completely cleaned,  it's just a matter of removing that one
section and replacing with a clean, new square.  Consequently, I recommend having at least two or three spare squares should something like that have to be done.

The most important thing is that the floor is as clean as possible or the tiles will start to come loose.  Of course, the more flat the floor, the better the overall
look.  Keep in mind too that you cannot put padding under the tile so the floor will only be as soft as the tiles themselves.

The squares in our offices are very short nap.  Almost like gray burlap. It wears very well. No idea of brand or cost.  Not my department. (thank gawd).

Like any carpet, they wear out, but as I was told with synthetic fiber carpets, they "ugly out" before they wear out, so for relatively short term they should be good for you. Moving heavy furniture over them was not a problem, and replacing stained tiles didn't become a problem until there was significant time, wear, and fading. One facility I worked in had a sort of Oriental rug look in some rooms, with a border and all.

Another place had them on steps. Ugly, potentially hazardous with edges lifting. Again, after several years of use.

As long as your base is fairly clean and level, they should suit your purpose if you can find a good deal on them.

Re: [DIY] Self stick carpet tiles

I have only had a client use them once.  The best I remember, the did not look too noticeable.  If there is a deep enough pile, it should be fine. His were fairly low pile.  He got them from Habitat For Humanities resell store.  Perhaps that is why some wholesaler donated them, because they were not good enough to sell well.

There is nothing wrong with carpet tiles if the individual squares look is OK with you.  You have no extra costs involved such as padding, glue, tack strips, or labor (other than sweat equity).  Also, you can replace individual tiles if they get stained.
