Should not a burned put motor render your unit inoperative and be obvious but
i think you said unit was operating ok except for smell?

Is there more than two motors ? Compressor motor, fan motor??

is one of the motors straining? Can you feel if motor running hot/overheating?

I wonder if HVAC guy possibly a little short of Christmas cash? $600 for a motor
sounds outrageous even with labor...

Google AC motors... 68.98 to $120 -- I'd buy exact replacement if that the case
and put it in myself.
