There is an option of placing a panel that fits between your partially open door and the fram with a dog door in it. This way, you get the doggie door without replacing the entire sliding glass door.
My bride has been opting for a doggie door onto the deck ever since we built it but it was not possible to cut one into the all glass storm door. Solution, new storm door and we did not want one of the out of a box specials so $580.00 later we had a quality top of the line door installed. It was of such impressive quality in fact that I have ordered a second one.
Found an extruded aluminum doggie door for just over $50.00, but I was not wanting to cut into the 5/8 inch thick kick panel of the storm door using a saber saw as it was sure to scratch the paint so, it was another new tool time.
Porter Cable and Rockwell have come out with their own take-offs on the Fein Multi Tool at less then half the cost of the German made model, and blades are far easier to find and not nearly to costly. It just so happens that Lowes and HD are both beginning to carry one of both of these tools. Ridgid has introduced a cordless model which I did not consider.
The long and the short of this story is that I opted for the Rockwell, and cut in the doggie door without so much as a scratch outside the cut line. The really nice part is that these oscillating saws will not accidentally cut flesh either, unless it is drawn tight. I suspect that they are an adaption of the oscillating saws that are used to cut bone and remove casts by the medical profession. These are also great for removing grout or cutting under cabinets and flush to walls or floors. The secret however is, Don't Force the tool, let it do the work. I used bees wax to lubricate the blade as well.
