Shelf brackets as Claudio suggested come in all sizes and shapes and are easy to put up. If your desk is wider than shelf width you might need more support. Lowe's and other stores carry individual legs, you could buy a couple, paint to match the desk and add them to the front edge. It would give more support if your little artist decided to climb on it. My youngest could climb before he could walk. You could even get four legs and make a free-sanding desk that is moveable, the legs just screw into the wood.
