As a young guy in the mid 1940's, I spent a night in a jail in Alton Illinois. (long story) Would have liked a concrete bed, my bed consisted of 2 inch steel criss crossed strapping side to side and head to toe, with about 4 inch gaps between them. No mattress at all and no food for 24 hours. Half a bowl of undrinkable "coffee" and that was it. That was my last experience with jail so don't kick me off the list.
