DH wanted a black powder rifle for years but once he got one he didn't use it as much as he thought he would. I don't know if it was more trouble to use or he just didn't get as involved as he thought he would, we had friends who were real enthusiasts. Being an engineer maybe your hubby just likes the challenge of putting one together :)
I can't give you the brand of our smoker off hand but we loved it. It was a round, vertical unit about 3' tall. Used charcoal and you put water in the bottom, wood chips went in next and the meat on the top racks. Wasn't too expensive, we bought it when we lived on the river; it worked great and made wonderful smoked salmon...you can buy all flavors of wood chips. I think what you want to smoke and how much you want to do at one time will make a difference in the type you get. We sold ours a few years ago but I might have some papers with the name on it.
