[DIY] Garage Door Opener Remote

The  remote control for my garage door works  sometimes and then does not. Sometimes I click it five or more times before the door rises. I have two in the house that are having the problem. So far the one in the car is fine. I've recently replaced batteries and the contacts look clean.

The remote is a Genie and over ten years old. If I need to buy a new one how do I program it? My husband was living when we had everything installed and I haven't the foggiest idea how they work together with the unit in the garage. I only need one in the house, not the two I currently have. So buying one isn't a problem. If that's needed should I go to the garage door store or can I just buy one at a hardware or big box type place?

Joyce, an old trick to moving things without leaving tracks or scars is to use a cookie sheet under the legs. Once you get it close with the padded bottom, slide a no rim cookie sheet or piece of clean sheet metal, like aluminum flashing maybe?, under it bit by bit, then move the whole thing back in place.

I'd let the floors cure a bit longer than the manufacturers say though. If they say okay to move furniture in 24 hours, wait 48 and see if it scars with a fingernail first.

[DIY] Re: Staining Aspen

I've used a sealer. And I've tried leaving the stain on longer. Also tried multiple applications of the stain. I haven't tried gel stain yet (thanks for the suggestion). It seems that Aspen is one of a handful of woods that will always be blotchy, regardless. So, I've decided to go with the wood and not stress out that the finish is blotchy. It's just a pool cue rack after all. Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you tried using a wood sealer before staining to get a more uniform stain?

Re: [DIY] Moving Heavy Furniture

I use the plastic disks for moving even heavy stuff.  Little movers..  I used to have a little wedge thingy that was used for adjusting drywall.  Step on it to allow removal of disks.  I did it with a heavy heavy wooden desk.  Worked like a charm

Taking suggestions and advice for moving heavy wooden bookshelves back into a room that has just had pine flooring put in.

It wont be a problem (oh sure) moving them into and across the room, but my concern is when we have to remove any padding or blanket from underneath so we can push the unit back against the wall.

Feed a transfer switch from both metered lines, then output lines to laundry circuit breaker. This requires honesty from users to throw switch to their own meter.

RE: [DIY] CASEMENT WINDOWS

Our first house had casement windows.  They were old and misaligned.  I suppose that's nothing to worry about with new ones.  But I was mainly worried about someone walking by the building or working in the garden and bumping their head on one.  No one did, but I was still concerned.

But they did allow for more air to be caught and directed into the house.

We love out casement Simonton 500 series. We leave our windows open as much as we can for clean air. I like the casement as they catch any breeze out there and are so easy to clean.
I need a lot of light to keep me happy in the winter months.  As we open and shut windows as much as twice a day- depending on weather, the casements are easy to operate. The vinyl easily wipes clean with a mild soap and water... always looks good.

People who like an even temperature year round with air and heat could find windows cheaper that are still easy to clean.

We custom ordered the windows, 2 were damaged and replaced by the company (very easy to deal with) We installed them...

Re: [DIY] Staining Aspen

I have never stainded aspen but have stained a lot of pine. We use liquid laundry softner to seal the wood first. Learned that the Amish in Wisconsin to that.

Have you googled for information?

RE: [DIY] REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

I don't understand - are you getting the windows and someone else is installing them?

If so, get double-paned replacement windows.  Triple are better, but not enough for the cost unless you have a new well insulated house.  Usually, there is still heat leakage through the roof, basement and walls, so the further expense is wasted.  You can get a UV tint on them which would further help on the heat transfer.

As far as the cost to install, I cannot say.  It depends on your situation - how many windows, floors, and the experience of the installer.  We just had some windows put in a rental 5-unit apartment building and cost us a bundle.  But we got a good company to measure, build, and install them and we're happy with the job they did.  Since we're paying for the electricity in that building, we felt it was a good investment.
