The manufacturer is protecting themselves against people that will grab a lightweight extension cord and try to operate the refrigerator with it. There is no problem with an extension cord, provided it is sized correctly. The National Electric Code has detailed information on sizing. But to avoid that hassle, just follow the advice of another user - get a 14 gauge extension cord. That will be good 15 amp service over a 20 foot distance, which would be fine for your refrigerator.
