You can get fairly inexpensive cable checkers that you plug into each end of the cable to verify the wires are all connected and go to the correct pins.

Using one of these has helped me save much frustration building cables or wiring ethernet outlets.
The color codes on some of those plates assume you are doing multi-line phone, and a different color code may be needed for ethernet.
