There are other ways to beef up a wood span by applying a 2" strip of 3/4 " 72" long (or whatever length) laminated wood to form a support *T* ...like i/2 of an *I-beam*... same sort of bracing that angle iron would be but a bit user-friendly for the typical home-owner.. apply with liquid nails.

A front and possible middle edge dressing an 1" or so thick will help,
but you are trying to span a long distance with a weak material.
