We live in area with a community well and many people seem to have problems with hard water. I put a magnet on the pipe with incoming water into the house 15 or 20 years ago and seem to get little calcium buildup. We had an on demand water heater installed 5 years ago and have never flushed it out. I cannot say the magnets are the reason why we get little calcium buildup but it sure does not seem to add to the problem. I would research magnets. Here is one link.
