Yes whole house filters are quite expensive! Over the last 15 years our water has changed and has a lot more iron in it than before. Since we installed a whole house unit we can have the filtering materials updated or changed to control the additional iron in the well water. In the long run it is worth it. I would stay away from water softeners since it adds a great deal of salt to the water. Our system uses salt to clean the filter only. I would say that the investment has paid off for us. We continue to have great water! We also installed an RO unit for drinking water and the ice maker in the frig.

We have very hard water here on the farm, lots of mineral/iron deposits. Our barn is all concrete floors and the pipes come up through the concrete. I know the water heater builds up deposits and I gave up on expensive coffee makers and just use a basic Mr. Coffee and the washable filter catches the sediment.
Our water tastes wonderful, no problem there. A water filter at the sink would handle the coffee pot situation but I am concerned about what it's doing to the hot water heater - which is a lot more expensive than a new coffee pot. Checking online there is a big price difference within each category for well water. Also, how would you go about installing a whole house filter to the pipe where the water comes in from the well. Our neighbors put in a water softener and a whole house filter when they built 20 yrs ago - but we don't have that option and I don't know if it's worth spending thousands of dollars to put one in. Any advice?
