Re: [DIY] Deadbolt Lock Fix or Replace?

There is a little shaft that runs from the inside part to the outside part of the lock. It could be flat or round. It is called a tail peace. That flat ones are easy to twist if the lock is a little hard to turn. Some times you can twist them back and straighten them. If that is not the problem I would replace it before it completely fails and the door won't open at all.

I would take the deadbolt off first to see if there is anything worn of if the latch is defective.  Sometimes that part in the door wears out or breaks and all that is needed to do is replace it with a similar latch.

If you ask me how the piece inside the door breaks, I have no idea.  It just does.  Gremlins, I suppose ....

Subject: [DIY] Deadbolt Lock Fix or Replace?

The deadbolt on my door uses a key on the outside and a knob to turn on the inside. I only use this door once a day to get my mail. We use the other doors for entry otherwise so it's not too urgent of a job.

When I turn the knob to open it recently the knob turns a full half turn instead of only the usual quarter turn. So if the turner is vertical it used to be horizontal when opened. Now it goes all the way to vertical upon unlocking or locking. I also have a little locking turn thing on the doorknob that I now use too. Plus the storm door is kept locked. Can you tell my husband is retired police? We love our security!

Is there a way to take out the deadbolt and perhaps just tighten something inside or does it need replacing?
