Re: [DIY] Deadbolt Lock Fix or Replace?

Nancy, my husband was on the PD for years when he was young and has the same- don't make it easy for them - mentality.  We also have a deadbolt issue on some doors we bought and had installed.  Gorgeous hardware but the deadbolt doesn't work.  I'm wondering if we have to have a locksmith out to remove the entire mechanism and, if so do we lose all the, beautiful antique hardware on the door.  Was hoping it could be repaired rather than start replacing.  We live a ways from town so hate to pay an expensive service just to find out.

The deadbolt on my door uses a key on the outside and a knob to turn on the inside. I only use this door once a day to get my mail. We use the other doors for entry otherwise so it's not too urgent of a job.

When I turn the knob to open it recently the knob turns a full half turn instead of only the usual quarter turn. So if the turner is vertical it used to be horizontal when opened. Now it goes all the way to vertical upon unlocking or locking. I also have a little locking turn thing on the doorknob that I now use too. Plus the storm door is kept locked. Can you tell my husband is retired police? We love our security!

Is there a way to take out the deadbolt and perhaps just tighten something inside or does it need replacing?
