One way is to use/buy a testing meter called an Amp Probe. You need to be a bit familiar with electrical wiring to use one as you must have access to the individual hot wire feeding the load, not both hot and neutral as in the cord supplying a device. One such access point would be in the breaker box. Typical cost is apx. $80, but I bought one on EBAY from China for $10 (been working fine for years). There may be other means to do so, not sure what though.
