Hi, Thanks for your response. The 18" is the length of the cable box plus a couple of inches for the legs of the shelf. It needs to be able to support at 10.5 lb. cat without sagging so it needs to be strong. I'm thinking just one piece for the top and two more at right angles to that for the pieces that would keep te shelf elevated to at least 4" (about 1" above the top of the cable box for ventilation. Funny thing, since I vacuumed the cat hair out of the box she has not returned to that spot for some reason.
