All wasps, hornets, and yellow jacket nests (with honey bees being the only exception) die going into the winter. The pregnant queen abandons her nest and “hibernates” over the winter until the next spring. If you ever get a new nest in the same location as a previous year, it’s only coincidental. Honey bee nest continue on throughout the winter but do move the nest from one location to another from time to time.
