The lights probably dimmed because the oven element was taking one side of the line to ground, either directly as a short or through a low resistance load as from the side of the burned element to the ground or the burned point.  This is not totally uncommon when an oven element burns out.  If it had been a direct short to ground it would have probably tripped the ranges breaker, keeping mind that the range breaker is probably 50 amps and if the draw was less than that it would not have tripped right away.
