My husband used to work for a painting contractor.  He uses medium weight plastic tarps, blue-taped to the baseboard or floor, then covered with a cloth tarp.
The cloth tarp absorbs small spills and keeps paint from being tracked around; the plastic is a life-saver when you knock over the 5-gallon bucket of paint.

The downstairs bathroom in my 'rehab house' is just about ready to paint.
Spent most of today taping and covering those things which are not to be
painted, which leads to a question....
How the heck does one keep the drop cloth on the floor in place?
Plastic drop cloth. New drywall. No baseboards yet.
Tape it to the floor? Tape it to the wall in the area which will be
covered by the baseboards?
