Re: [DIY] tile backsplash and electrical outlets

a few companies make plastic guards for this situation; using longer 6-32 screws on the plugs and switches these guards are placed around the device to insulate it from the surrounding surfaces and provide a way to install the device flush with the surface of your tile. be sure to cut tile to the same opening size as the box so opening can be sealed by the cover. check your local big box store or hardware store. if you haven't done the tile yet, you may be able to extend the box with a metal extension, available at the hardware store. if you can get the original box loose from the structure, re-installing it to the correct depth would be best case since wiring may be too short for other extension methods. remember to use GFCI receptacles on your kitchen and bathroom counters!

Subject: [DIY] tile backsplash and electrical outlets

How do I adjust for the new wall thickness at outlets after I tile?
Set the boxes further forward?
tile around the cover plates?
get loooong screws for the plates?
or, hopefully, another option?
I have to account for three outlets and two switches.
