Now that LED's are available in brightness equal to 60 and 100 watts and have come down in cost, we have replaced almost all of our CFL and Standard bulbs. ACE how has 60 watt equivalent bulbs for $10.00 for a package of four, which is about what a good incandescent bulb used to cost. These draw less than 10 watts per bulb and are instantly full brightness as well. Our outside bulbs are all 40 watt equivalent and I have had only one that needed to be replaced after 3 years of constant burning. Many I have either wired direct or we just never turn them off. 100 watt equivalent bulbs are still a bit pricey but they too will come down in the near future. Due to the fact that they do not get nearly as hot, the sockets should last a lot longer as well. The flood light for our flag is also led and it to is wired direct, and has burned continuously for nearly three years now. It also light up the trees and much of the back yard at night.

I have had success in the past (after breaking the lamp bulb and using a needle nosed pliers to fold the bulb base down so it vcan be unscrewed. Then I have polished the socket threads with an abrasive material. There synthetic abrasive sponges now available (i used steel wool back then - but since the steel is conductive one MUST be certain all the fuzzy metal fibers are cleaned off). Clean the threaded areas with a clean rag and alcohol. You can use a light metal polish to smooth the surface. The new bulb will screw into the socket effortlessly and will be easy to remove years later in the bulbs life.

As we replace the bulbs in these old light fixtures the socket comes loose about half the time. I guess the bulbs have been in so long they've corroded so won't unscrew. Can those be repaired, short of calling an electrician? One hanging light fixture has 8 globes and so far only one bulb has come out like it should. I'm not sure these are as antique as the previous owner stated but still, they are old and beautiful.
