Jan, Sounds like you need to remove the fixture from the ceiling and rewire the whole thing; you might even want to clean/ polish/ paint, change color, clear coat, etc. A handyman can remove it for you and stick up a cheap temporary fixture while this is being repaired properly. That way, no big rush
