Assuming you don't smell any gas, maybe turn everything off, let it sit for awhile then turn the gas back on and try to light the pilot.
Know nothing about water heaters but we have old gas logs upstairs, if they're not used for awhile, we have to turn the knob really hard several times to get a spark that will light the pilot, then hold it in longer than usual. Gas company suggested leaving the pilot light on all the time, said if we shut gas off for the summer the line gets dust in it and needs to be blown out good before we light it for winter. Although that shouldn't be the case for a few days.
