Christine, there are now several washers with the steam option to deep clean which I like. I have the steam setting on my Samsung dryer, however the installer said unless I used it all the time the water would develop a moldy smell so recommended we didn't even have it hooked up. I had a front loader the first time they were out, many years ago. I like a top load so I can add some things a few minutes before the wash cycle ends, or just at the rinse cycle.

I got the LG front loader about 4 years ago and couldn't be happier. It replaced a top of the line Kenmore top loader that was designed after the Maytag Calypso. I bought that one for the large capacity washing that it offered.
