Re: [DIY] More door questions

I wouldnt assume that the contractors are going to be better than anyone else. I would want references.

I would be surprised if they got it done in one day, but miracles  do happen.

We still have the traditional barn door that leads to the courtyard on the south side.  Love the door but was impossible to seal it tight last winter.  We have decided to install a 36" exterior door and storm door.  Studs are 2x6" - current door is 42"x90" so plenty of room.  The doors alone are over $1000,  Lowe's is coming out next week to give an estimate on installing these plus a storm door on the front.  The contractor installed a new 36" front door last year so shouldn't be too much work to install a storm door there.  The side door will need to be framed in to the correct size — plus we live right on the line of their 20 mile, $95 installation fee.  When we set up the appt they didn't seem too happy about it needing framing.  I'm concerned we might end up paying more to have the doors installed than they cost.  We're also buying two interior doors but think we can do them ourselves.

Does this sound like a one-day job or a more complicated procedure?  Could we save money by doing the initial framing ourselves and maybe hiring a local guy to do the installation or would it be smart to just pay Lowes assuming they do this all the time and would do a better job.  Anyone venture a guess of approximately how many hours/cost we should expect? (SW MO)  We can do the final finish to the interior & exterior walls ourselves, I'm just concerned about getting the doors installed properly.

Thanks again,
