I used to work for an apartment building with garbage disposals. A lot of times they go out. One reason we don't have them in our rentals today. I always unplugged it then, using a wet-dry vacuum, cleaned it out. NEVER put your hand in it, even unplugged. If someone had dropped a china cup, you won't know your hand is cut till you bring it out. The shards are THAT sharp.

Sometimes our GD gets a nasty appetite and wont let go of a

food caught between its teeth and sidewall...very gently we
take a
2ft length of rebar and slowly get it behind one of the
grinder bars
and lever the plate around till it frees up.
Symptom is slight hum then the button on the bottom
clicks...
so we rebar it and then push reset and GD happy GRINder

Hi Carol, if you look under your
sink where the disposal is, at the bottom of the
disposal,
you should find a red button. That button is a breaker
switch built into the disposal. It's possible
thatbutton is tripped.
Depending on the manufacturer, the
button may be another color but it's usually located
at
or near the underside of the disposal unit.
