If it worked, then you started running out of hot water, one of the two elements may have gone out, or tripped the button (surge or too hot will trip, I.e. stuck thermostat). The button is there to trip when thermo sticks shut to keep from turning water heater into a bomb. If it trips a 2nd time, check element (maybe blown now) and replace the thermostat. A short in a heater element can weld the contacts shut on the thermostat.
