[DIY] Re: Windows

Aide from low-e or not low-e, you need to make a decision as to how to replace your windows, i.e., new construction or replacement.

By replacement, I mean windows whose frames are inserted into your current frames. You lose a couple of inches of glass area in each direction but it's a much lower cost, easier installation.

Or, you install new construction windows, totally replacing your current frames, etc. However, one then has to rework the siding around each window - a much more expensive proposition.

One can get replacement (insert) windows for as low as $150/ea. I've installed dozens by myself (I'm a landlord with multiple properties). Some are now 30 years old without problems, even with hard tenant use.

The windows and the work involved with new construction types may cost you a good $500/ea - a much more expensive proposition.

Extra features such as frosted glass, low-e, divided panes, etc can be ordered in each type.
